Salve, sono nuovo del blog, pertanto un saluto a tutti è dovuto. Sono in procinto dell'acquisto di un Moody 419cc anni 1985.
Motore Thornycroft 5600 ore.
Ho visitato la barca:
Non ho riscontrato cedimenti in coperta, la base dell'albero sembra buona, le lande mi sembrano a posto, carena e scafo non presentano osmosi o crepe. I perni del bulbo sono stati sostituiti nel 2022. Non ho notato nulla di strano nel timone e nello skeg . I legni interni sono piuttosto rovinati, qualche infiltrazione dagli oblò. Chiedo pareri e suggerimenti su cosa dovrei controllare alla mia seconda visita. Inoltre chiedere: è normale la moquette incollata al pavimento nella cabina di poppa? Cosa controllare lungo il circuito della timoneria? L'opera morta è monolitica o sandwich? Grazie

I didn't find any sagging on the deck, the base of the mast looks good, the chain plates look fine to me, the hull and hull show no osmosis or cracks. The bulb pins were replaced in 2022. I didn't notice anything unusual about the rudder and skeg. The internal woods are rather damaged, some infiltration from the portholes. I ask for opinions and suggestions on what I should check on my second visit. Also ask: is the carpet glued to the floor in the aft cabin normal? What to check along the wheelhouse circuit? Keel bolts. These may ve rusty but probably only need wire brushing off and re-treating. But also check the compression post that supports the mast
Chain plates. Recommend removing cover plates, digging out old sealant and replacing. It is not possible to see the security of chain plates without removing woodwork, better regular replacement of sealant.
Fuel tank. The feed does not come from the bottom of the original steel tank. There may well be a lot of bad diesel, water, rust and muck in the bottom. Remove the inspection hatch, insert a pipe to suck out all the diesel and re-filter it. Check for condition of the tank especially the bottom welds. I replaced my tank with plastic many years ago and positioned the filler inside the cockpit locker.
Deck. This is a sandwich construction with a balsa core.
Aft cabin. My carpet is secured using velcro along the aft edge.

Thanks, absolutely interesting Micky. I take the opportunity to ask you: what exactly to check in the compression shaft? The engine, Thornycroft 50 hp, has 5600 hours, is that a lot? The owner says he has always maintained it. Does the propeller shaft have thrust bearings? I don't know if the owner will agree to me removing the chain plates that protect the holes to check, if so what could be an indication of moisture inside? What about helm system ?For the keel i'ts ok studs, nuts and plates were replaced last year. Thanks again . Enrico
 
Enrico, The compression post takes the loads from the mast down to the keel. The base of mine was rather rusty when I purchased. Used a wire brush to clean it. Finished by using Hammerite paint which is particularly good at treating and protecting rusty metal.
Sounds like you have the original Thornycroft T108 engine. Your engine hours are not excessive. I had problems with my engine and decided to change to a Beta 60 before going on a longer cruise. The engine is designed to take the thrust from the propeller.
Chain plates. I am referring to the little stainless steel covers which are screwed down around the chain plate. Renewing the sealant is a periodic task - you cannot inspect the chain plate fastenings without a lot of removal of woodwork inside the boat. So you need to do the best that you can to keep water from entering from the deck.
Steering. The part that is likely to cause trouble is the conduits which take the steel wires cables. Red coloured conduits are the old ones - new ones are much stronger and coloured blue. I have recently posted some pictures of what happened when I lost my steering. https://www.moodyowners.info/threads/steering-cable-tension.24645/ I think you need to be a full member to see this. The important thing is not to over tension the cables. You should be able to turn the wheel completely with one finger.

Hi Micky, hi everyone. I have just returned from my second check on the Moody 419. Attached are some photos of the most suspicious areas in my opinion, and others of the correctly maintained areas. Also in the forward cabin there is a hatch, see photo, inside I found a C-shaped plate, which I think is the reinforcement of the second forestay, correct me if I'm wrong, and this is very rusty (unfortunately it's the 'only photo I've lost). Enrico, it could be reinforcement for the cutter stay (second forestay) if she is a cutter rig. Or it could be mounting bolts for the anchor windlass (or both). They are both mounted on the same bulkhead I think (I will check mine as mine is a cutter).

I have something like 7500 hrs on my engine, it all depends on how well it has been looked after, and they are fairly cheap to maintain.
