When be bought Horizon 2 seasons ago, this Easy Reef system was fitted along with the brand new main sail. At first, we were a little skeptical of the roller furling main sail, but due to the new main sail, couldn’t justify the cost of replacing it.
Having sailed about 1500NM over two seasons, the Easy reef system has won us over. It’s so easy, quick and safe to use. In this time, we’ve had one jam due to applying no back-tension to the outhaul when furling, and this was simple to rectify by simply unfurling a bit and having another go.
For coastal cruising and occasional offshore passage making, the Easy Reef system is ideal! However, with a potential circumnavigation on the cards, we’ve very reluctantly decided to change to a slab reefed main to allow setting of a heavier sail and the slightly increased potential that we can make any requisite repairs underway, should the worst happen.

Offers around £1500 for the lot. Collection from Wareham, Dorset. I will consider breaking if anyone is interested in certain parts. Also note, the system is still currently installed / in use, but will be removed at when the mast comes down (in about 3 weeks)
For some reason our boom has been extended (literally, a section on the same boom extrusion has been stoutly welded on). With the current main sail we use, the extra boom length is not necessary as the outhaul car is before the welded section (can be seen in photos). It may be that one of the other main sails might have a longer foot. If time permits before having the mast dropped, I will try and hoist the two other sails and will take photos.

- ‘Easy Reef’ behind-the-mast main sail furling system. Unknown age. Good working order. Length TBC, but suitable for a Moody 37/376 with a mainsail luff design dimensions ‘P’ of 12.6m, or anything smaller if cut down. Can be disassembled into sections of about 3m for transport.
- Outhaul traveler. Unknown age. Good working order. Length 3m.
- Custom mast bracket. This replaces the standard fit Kemp/Selden boom bracket to allow the boom to clear the furler. It’s made of 5mm thick 316 stainless and has put up with decades of use without issue.
- Unbattened Main Sail by Quay Sails. 2 seasons (1500NM of coastal cruising use). Good condition. See photos. Dimensions unknown, but fits the standard Moody 37/376 rig of max luff (P) = 12.6m and max foot (E) = 4.3m.
- Maxi Roach vertically battened main sail. Unknown age. Looks in useable condition, but never hoisted. Includes vertical battens. Dimensions unknown.
- ‘Bonus’ Sail. Unknown age. Unknown condition – Never even unfolded by us! Quite possibly the original main sail that was used when the easy reef system was installed. Dimensions unknown.
